'Beowulf' is an epic poem of Old English literature, a cornerstone of the Anglo-Saxon tradition. The poem recounts the heroic deeds of Beowulf, a Geatish warrior renowned for his strength and courage. He sails to the aid of Hrothgar, king of the Danes, whose mead hall, Heorot, is terrorized by the monstrous Grendel. Beowulf confronts and defeats Grendel, and later, Grendel?s vengeful mother. Later in life, Beowulf returns to Geatland and becomes king. His final challenge comes in the form of a dragon, whose treasure hoard has been disturbed. Beowulf, though aged, confronts the dragon in a fierce battle, ultimately slaying the beast but at the cost of his own life. The poem explores themes of heroism, fate, good versus evil, and the transience of human life and glory. 'Beowulf' stands as a testament to the values and beliefs of early medieval society, offering a window into a world of warriors, monsters, and the enduring power of legend. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
